Description
Monsoon Malabar is one of coffee’s oldest specialties. After harvest, natural-process Arabica from southern India is laid out in open-sided warehouses on the Malabar coast during the June–September monsoon. For 12–16 weeks the moist sea winds swell the beans and turn them pale yellow, and the coffee loses most of its acidity. The result is a heavy, smooth, round cup. Grown in Chikmagalur, Karnataka, India Altitude 1,067–1,280 m Varieties Selection 795, Selection 9, Catuai, Cauvery Process Natural (sun-dried), then monsooned June–September Harvest December–February Grade AA: at least 90% of beans on a screen 18 (7.1 mm) sieve The coffee is grown on family-owned farms under shade, alongside pepper, cardamom and oranges. “Monsooned Malabar Arabica Coffee” is a protected Geographical Indication in India, so the name can only be used for coffee monsooned on that coast. Bag sizes: 1 lb, 4 lb and 15 lb. Store sealed in a cool, dry, dark place. FAQ Why are the beans pale and large? Monsooning swells the beans to about double their size and turns them from green-gold to pale straw. Is this coffee roasted? No. It’s green, unroasted coffee for home roasting. What does AA mean? It’s the top size grade for monsooned coffee: at least 90% of the beans stay on a screen 18 sieve.
